A fire door is one of the most important fire safety products on your premises. The simple purpose of a fire door in everyday use is just like any other door.

In event of a fire, the fire doors create a protected route to safety and slow down the escalation of fires by withstanding the attack of fire for a period of time (usually 30 minutes).

A properly fitted and maintained fire door can help to suppress a fire and restrict its initial development by limiting the amount of oxygen available to it. It will also create a sealed barrier against smoke and flames!

A recent survey where 677 doors were inspected at thirty-one different sites resulted in the identification of 2,506 faults including:

  • Problems with fire or smoke seals
  • Incorrect signage
  • Gaps bigger than 3mm between the door and its frame
  • Unsuitable hinges
  • Damage to the door.

What to look for when checking fire door:

Door leaf carries a third-party certification

Gap between door and frame not more than 3mm

Intumescent or Smoke Seals intact around the door

  • Fire-tested ironmongery fitted
  • At least 3 x CE marked hinges
  • Functioning door closing devices
  • Correct signage
  • Door not wedged open.
